Keep Your Pre-Arrival Price in Canada
Choose an eligible plan before arrival and continue with the applicable pre-arrival rate after reaching Canada. This matters more for someone staying several months than for someone visiting for a weekend.
Canada SIM Card from the United States — Compare Your Options Before You Travel Travelling from the United States to Canada? Your current U.S. phone plan may already work there, so check what you have before paying for anything new. If you need something different, GetCanadaSIM lets you compare Canadian mobile plans, check whether your phone is compatible, and look at eSIM and physical SIM options before your trip. For most U.S. travellers, the choice comes down to three options: Keep your U.S. SIM · Add a travel eSIM · Use a Canadian SIM or eSIM A weekend in Toronto and a one-year move to Canada need very different mobile setups. Compare based on the trip you are actually taking.

The United States is different from many other countries because Canada roaming is already included with a lot of American mobile plans.
Your American plan may be perfect for a holiday. But if you are moving to Canada for university, work or a longer stay, it is worth comparing an ongoing Canadian plan instead of relying only on travel roaming. The current U.S. page shows eligible Canada-only pre-arrival options at $35–$40 CAD/month, plus a Rogers U.S.+Canada option at $50 CAD/month.
Compare the Rogers, Fido and Chatr plans currently shown on the page. For U.S. travellers, there is another useful question: Will you still travel regularly between Canada and the United States? The current page includes a Rogers plan designed for use across both countries. When comparing plans, look at more than the headline data number: Monthly price · Data · U.S. usage · Canada usage · Calls · SMS · Hotspot · Network access · Plan terms For example: * If you often travel across the border, U.S.+Canada usage may matter more. * If you work from your laptop, hotspot may be important. * If you mainly use home, work or campus Wi-Fi, the lower monthly price may matter more. Keep the existing Student / PR / Work Permit and Tourist / Super Visa tabs. Keep the current plan cards, plan prices, allowances, features, badges and buttons unchanged. Keep the existing tax note below the plans.
Plan pricing does not include taxes. Tax will be added to your final bill depending on the province/state.

Maybe you flew into Toronto or Vancouver. Maybe you simply drove across the border. Either way, your phone may quickly become useful for maps, transit, a ride, accommodation details or sending a quick message home.

If your U.S. plan already gives you enough Canada service, keeping it may be the simplest option. If you decide an ongoing Canadian plan fits your stay better, look beyond the data allowance. The current eligible offer also includes several billing and flexibility features.
Choose an eligible plan before arrival and continue with the applicable pre-arrival rate after reaching Canada. This matters more for someone staying several months than for someone visiting for a weekend.
Eligible postpaid orders currently require no payment when the order is submitted. That means your Canadian mobile plan does not have to become another immediate travel expense.
Your first payment may be due later, giving you some time after arrival before your first bill. That can be useful when you are also managing accommodation, transport and other settling-in costs.
Eligible plans on the current page do not carry a separate setup or activation fee. Compare the complete cost of each option, not just the headline monthly price.
Eligible plans are presented as flexible monthly plans rather than fixed-term contracts. That gives you more flexibility if your time in Canada changes.
The current page states that eligible plans can be arranged before arrival without established Canadian credit history, SIN or local Canadian ID. This is an eligibility feature. It is not a promise about building or improving a credit score.
Travelling from the U.S. to Canada could mean a weekend road trip, a semester abroad or a full move.
Whatever the reason, your mobile setup is easier to compare before you go.
Before travelling, you can:
The advantage is simple:
you still have your U.S. carrier account, phone details and plenty of time to compare everything properly.

Starting university, college or an exchange programme in Canada?
Your U.S. plan may be fine for occasional trips across the border but not necessarily the option you want to use throughout an entire semester or academic year.
Compare a Canada SIM for U.S. students based on monthly price, useful data, hotspot, calling and how long you expect to stay.
See Options for StudentsMoving to Canada for a job or another work arrangement?
Your phone may quickly become useful for maps, transport, messages, calls and everyday mobile data.
If Canada becomes where you spend most of your time, compare your American roaming allowance with an ongoing Canadian mobile plan.
See Options for Work PermitsComing to Canada for a holiday, family visit, ski trip or road trip?
Check your U.S. plan first.
If it already includes enough Canada data, calls and messages, you may not need another service.
If it does not, compare a travel eSIM or prepaid Canada SIM from the USA.
See Options for VisitorsIf Canada will be home for several months or longer, think beyond your first border crossing.
Monthly cost, data allowance, hotspot, Canadian calling and flexibility become more important once Canada becomes part of your everyday life.
See Options for NewcomersBefore buying anything, you have three main options.
The right one depends mostly on what your U.S. plan already includes and how long you will be in Canada.
This can be the easiest option if your American plan already gives you enough Canada usage. T-Mobile, AT&T, Verizon and several smaller carriers currently offer Canada roaming in at least some plans.
Best for: Short trips when your existing plan already covers what you need.
A travel eSIM can be useful when your main need is extra mobile data. On a compatible dual-SIM phone, you may be able to keep your U.S. line active while using the second line for Canadian data.
Best for: Holidays, road trips and short visits where data is the main priority.
A Canadian mobile plan can make more sense when you are staying for several months and want ongoing Canadian mobile service. Instead of depending on temporary roaming allowances, you use a Canadian plan for your regular calls, texts and data.
Best for: Students, workers, newcomers and longer stays.
Use this to narrow it down quickly.
Canada is included with a lot of American mobile plans. But “Canada included” does not always mean unlimited high-speed data with no conditions. Check your exact plan before relying on it for a longer stay.
T-Mobile currently includes Canada and Mexico usage with many plans. Depending on the plan, customers can receive up to 30 GB of high-speed roaming data, followed by reduced-speed data. If you use T-Mobile, check: * Your Canada high-speed data allowance * Speed after the allowance is used * Hotspot conditions * Talk and text * Any extended-roaming rules For a holiday or short visit, T-Mobile Canada roaming may already be enough. For a longer stay, compare the allowance with a Canadian plan.
AT&T currently says all domestic unlimited plans and most MobileShare plans can use talk, text and data in Canada without roaming charges. Eligible unlimited plans can also include talk and text within and between the U.S., Canada and Mexico, along with access to plan data while in Canada. If you use AT&T, check your exact plan before travelling. Some AT&T Prepaid plans also include Canada, but prepaid conditions differ by plan. For a short stay, AT&T Canada roaming may be all you need.
Verizon currently includes roaming in Canada and Mexico with its Unlimited plans. For lines that use TravelPass instead, Verizon currently lists Canada and Mexico at $6 per line per day. If you use Verizon, check: * Whether Canada is already included * Your data conditions * Whether TravelPass applies * What repeated daily charges would cost over your full stay A daily pass can be convenient for a short trip. It is a different calculation if you are spending months in Canada. Mint, Visible & Other U.S. Providers Smaller U.S. carriers vary much more. Mint currently includes free Canada roaming with its plans, with unlimited talk and text plus 3 GB of high-speed Canada data. Visible's current setup depends on the plan. Its Global Pass covers Canada, and current Visible plans also offer different levels of Canada/Mexico roaming benefits. Google Fi also includes Canada and Mexico international use on eligible plans. If you use an MVNO, check: * Whether Canada roaming is included * High-speed data allowance * Hotspot availability * Daily or monthly charges * Any limits on extended international use For a visit, built-in U.S. roaming can be very convenient. For university, work or a longer stay, compare the total cost and usage rules with a Canadian plan.
A monthly postpaid plan is not right for every U.S. traveller.
If you are visiting Canada for a holiday, family visit, road trip or shorter stay, a prepaid Canada SIM or eSIM may be simpler.
With prepaid service, you pay for a defined service period instead of starting ongoing monthly postpaid billing.
If you only need Canadian service for a few days or weeks, prepaid can keep things simple.
Choose the data allowance and service period that fit your trip before travelling.
Useful when you do not expect to keep Canadian mobile service once your trip ends.
If your phone supports eSIM, you can choose a compatible option without inserting another physical SIM card.
Some travel eSIMs mainly provide mobile data. If you want calls, SMS and a Canadian number as part of your Canadian service, choose a plan that includes those features.
Your trip length is one of the simplest ways to narrow the choice. A tourist spending a few weeks in Canada may have very different needs from an international student beginning a multi-year program or a worker relocating for a longer period.
Prepaid may fit better if:
Postpaid may fit better if:
Eligible Get Canada Sim postpaid plans start from $35 CAD/month.
Compare Monthly Postpaid PlansThe setup should be easy to understand, even if you have never used an eSIM before.

Both options are available. The difference is whether you would rather research your Canada SIM card from United States before your journey or make the same decisions once you are already handling your arrival in Canada.
You can compare your options while you still have time to check the details carefully.
You can also wait until Canada to make the decision.
In short: buying a Canadian SIM before leaving the United States is not mandatory.
Compare plans before you flyOrdering a Canada SIM from United States before reaching Canada means you should be able to verify what you are buying and who you are buying it from. Do not rely only on promotional wording. Check the provider information, company details, support channels, policies and genuine customer reviews.

The exact behaviour depends on the device and your U.S. carrier.
